2015: The Serge Modular Synthesizer
OutSpoken presents: an exploratory discussion and demonstration on the use and history of the Serge with Lx Rudis, Doug Lynner, Dmitri Nikolai Sfcoa
Originally developed by a CalArts professor who wished to provide his students a low-cost alternative to the expensive Buchla and Moog synthesizers of the time, the Serge Synthesizer has come to be recognized as one of the original modular synthesizers and is a highly respected marque.
In recent years, there has been new interest in these unique instruments. Australian builder Ken Stone, in restoring his own vintage Serge, found himself resurrecting many of the original ’70s-era designs, which has led to a new cottage industry of “self built” Serge synthesizers. In San Francisco, Dmitri Ponce runs COA Modular Synthesizers, a company which works directly with Ken Stone and original designer Serge Tcherapnin in construction of Serge panels heavily influenced by the original instruments and build sessions at CalArts.
