2014: Improvisation Workshop and Performance

an OutSpoken event

Pianist, composer, and educator Thollem McDonas will lead a collaboration/improvisation workshop for musicians and non-musicians alike. The participants will investigate concepts of structured and free improvisation as well as developing the character of an ensemble through active listening exercises and collaboration skills. Overall, the emphasis is not necessarily on individual creativity but on collaboration with others. This workshop encourages participation by anyone regardless of their musical experience, age, or language. It's open to dancers, musicians, filmmakers, writers, actors, fine artists and more. Most importantly, the workshop develops organically from the input of the participants, a natural progression, a structured improvisation of its own. It will culminate in a performance the following evening.

“Thollem's ability to focus on and orchestrate the range of each participant's abilities into a creative work that raises the quality of the whole, is the result of his years of tireless, rigorous international experimentation.” —Dr. Hafez Modirzadeh, SFSU
